statement
My transformation to artist and educator is rooted in a belief of hard scientific fact; mathematics, physics, and chemistry. As a mathematician I was a lousy artist - my only drawing was of numbers and greek symbols allocated mostly to calculus and differential equations. However, mathematical theory opened my mind to the idea of interpretation. Taking something to be true without proof felt familiar to me. From the baptismal holy water poured across my scalp, I was raised under a catholic household and educated in several parochial institutions. And yet in my mind, there was always something lacking from the concept of faith... proof. The discovery that a preacher of god and a professor of science would stand in front of their respective congregations and ask people to accept their theories on faith, astonished me. Needless to say, my art practice, developed from such realizations, results in some skeptical if not confused works.
Because of my interest in the sciences, careers in the technological sector, and love of optics, I found photography. Or perhaps photography was an inevitable end game for me, capturing evidence with instantaneous proof. Most of my photographic work is calculated, staged performances that exhibit the forbidden, psychosexual behaviors, issues of the body, beauty, and intimacy. Not only do I wrestle with religion, but I also have wrenching scientific guilt. My current work harnesses my aptitude and understanding of the sciences and has moved my work in new directions. I experiment with video, interactive sculpture, and have even regressed from the technological to analog art and scientific practices. I am a champion of the digital revolution, and yet an exorable participant.
